As
Lefty Kreh stated in his introduction to “The
Book
of the Tarpon“ in 1990:
"It is clear that Webster never
caught a tarpon. Read how he defines tarpon: ‘a
large silvery Elongated isopondylous marine fish (Tarpon
atlantics) common to the coast of Florida that reaches
a length of about six feet and is a noted sport fish.
Ask someone who has stood on the platform of a skiff….as
he watches a pod of six -footers approach. To this man
armed with a fragile fly rod or casting rod, these are
not ’ long silvery elongates,’ they are
true monsters! The angler wonders ‘How in the
name of God am I going to cast accurately at one? And,
what in the hell am I going to do if one takes my offering?’
The cast is made, a giant green and silver fish opens
a mouth as big as a water bucket, sucking the lure or
fly deep. The guide screams, ‘Strike!’ He
does. There is a brief moment when all is silent, then
the water erupts in front of him, with the tarpon leaping
upward like a swift, wavering, silver rocket. Water
flies in all directions, as if a high-pressure hose
has broken. Before he recovers, the tarpon does it again-
and again! He never heard the guide screaming for him
to bow. Suddenly all is quiet. He reels in and looks
at a broken leader. Fishing will never be the same again
for the angler who has experienced this. No, Webster
never caught a tarpon.”
Fish the beautiful Charlotte Harbor area of Southwest
Florida known as the Tarpon Capital of the World. In
addition to the Silver King, Snook and Redfish are as
plentiful here as anywhere. Captain Dave Varble is a
